Matthew Ewens
Spear’s Review
Matthew Ewens was initially called to the Bar in 2006 and cross-qualified as a solicitor in 2012. Now a partner in the white-collar crime and investigations group within the dispute resolution department at Mishcon de Reya, he advises on all aspects of white-collar crime, with a specialism in tax matters, including civil and criminal tax investigations.
‘There is a greater degree of pressure being exerted by HMRC,’ he explains, particularly within the foreign tax team, which looks at individuals based outside of the UK but with strong financial and corporate connections to the country. As a result, his work is often multi-jurisdictional, and clients hail from all over the world.
Ewens is also experienced in cases involving investigations by the Serious Fraud Office and the US Department of Justice, and has represented clients who have been sanctioned by the US government.
