HMRC is becoming more innovative with the Connect platform – a data-driven analytical tool used to seek out tax evasion and avoidance – according to the bright and personable Waqar Shah. Not only is the Revenue targeting the very wealthy but, increasingly, the mass affluent, as well as modern entrepreneurs such as YouTubers and influencers who share details of their lives online.
‘One individual came under HMRC’s watchful gaze after posting photos of their luxury holidays on Facebook,’ he says, adding that HMRC are also looking at sources such as DVLA registrations, among countless others.
Shah is a litigation partner at Kingsley Napley and head of tax disputes and investigations. He arrived at the firm in 2023 after spending nearly a decade as a rising star solicitor and then partner at Mishcon de Reya.
