Family lawyer Ruth Abrams aims to ‘make a divorce as painless and as smooth as it can be’, while also ensuring that her clients ‘grow and become empowered through the process’. 

Having joined Keystone Law’s family team as a partner in 2020, she has established a broad practice in private children work, cohabitation and prenuptial agreements, but contentious financial remedy cases in particular.

Abrams acts for clients from a range of backgrounds, and reports a growing number of high-earning professionals such as bankers, surgeons and lawyers alongside several entertainers in the public eye. 

‘I also have quite a lot of clients who have cases with an international aspect,’ she tells Spear’s, adding that this often necessitates liaising with lawyers in other jurisdictions or determining the most appropriate country in which to issue proceedings.

Increasingly, her cases are resolved outside of the court system. ‘There is a growing trend now for non-court dispute resolution, and so there are a lot of private financial dispute resolution hearings or arbitrations – it’s almost like a parallel private system,’ she says. 

One misconception she encounters is that all contentious cases involve clients with malicious intentions. ‘There’s a surprising preconception that in divorce, they’re at each other’s throats, but that’s not always the case. I have a lot of clients who want to be fair.’
