Spear’s Review

Sam Carver, partner at Payne Hicks Beach, advises international families and expatriates on tax and trust matters spanning multiple jurisdictions. He has particular expertise in issues involving individuals moving to or from locations such as France, Monaco, Switzerland, Jersey and the US.  

Carver tells Spear’s of a recent situation in which his team resolved a conflict between warring branches of the same family. ‘It concerned a very large trust, but we conjured up a healthy settlement in the courts of the BVI that ultimately involved a good half-dozen other jurisdictions.’

His clients range from British expatriates to non-UK families with interests in the UK, often involving trusts and long-term wealth planning. He has, however, noticed an increase in the number of clients leaving the country. ‘There’s so much going on in this great country of ours, especially families with young children because of the schools. But people do factor in tax in a big way.’
