Sarah Barker leads the art and fashion groups of Lee & Thompson, advising both private and business clients. Combining the law, business and the arts, her role sees Barker bring to bear experience in corporate and commercial law she gained in the City, and experience gained through working in the art sector.
‘I act for successful individuals and/or their businesses in relation to all their commercial matters,’ she says. ‘There may initially be an art or other creative element to the work, but I can look after all their business and other interests.’
Barker joined Lee & Thompson in 2017, after the firm acquired Montgomery Barker, the specialist firm she founded in 2011. Notable UHNW/HNW clients include well- known entrepreneurs, YBAs, art dealers and collectors. Barker – who also possesses experience in the Italian market – has recently been working with some ‘major’ female artists. One gallery owner remarks that Barker ‘really understands the art world’; another says she has a ‘rare skill’ for communicating well with creatives.
As one of the UK’s leading law firms for businesses in the creative industries, the firm’s litigation team also advises on contentious matters like title, authenticity, IP and agency disputes. ‘Looking after clients in the business and art worlds often necessitates some involvement in dispute resolution,’ Barker says.‘I can bring my considerable experience of dispute resolution in the art sector to the table when it comes to providing clients with holistic advice and helping them reach a settlement deal.’
