Spear’s Review
It’s a case of gamekeeper turned poacher for Withers’ Jeff Millington, who started his career with HMRC and left 24 years later.
Millington advises private individuals in matters related to taxation compliance, whether this is advising clients on how to best structure their wealth, or by leading investigations for those facing civil or criminal fraud enquiries. ‘It helps if you know what the inspector is thinking,’ he tells Spear’s, referencing his time at the revenue.
One recent challenge was dealing with a client’s lapsed tax assessment: ‘The inspector became bogged down and didn’t realise the bigger picture,’ he says. In this case, a compromise was found – Millington credits this to the use of disclosure facilities, which have raised billions for HMRC while also helping his clients. His use of the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility once reduced a client’s tax bill from £10 million to zero.
