‘I have quite a lot of repeat clients; sometimes they have started with a Sunseeker and go up to a megayacht,’ says Dr Jonathan Hadley-Piggin, a partner at Keystone specialising in marine and superyacht law.
Focusing on transactional work – namely financing, sales and purchases – Hadley-Piggin has also handled matters involving the construction, operation and disposal of superyachts, as well as disputes, insurance and commercial arrangements.
He remains busy despite a difficult global economic climate: ‘In the last few months, I’ve had seven yachts over 30m, and I’m in the middle of buying a 40m [yacht] for around £25 million.’
Before qualifying as a solicitor in 1995, Hadley-Piggin was a submarine officer in the Royal Navy and a navigating officer with BP Shipping. He is heavily involved in yachting education, sitting as an examiner of aspiring superyacht captains in the MCA Master Yachts programme.
