It’s a case of gamekeeper turned poacher for Withers’ Jeff Millington, who started his career at HMRC aged 17 and left 24 years later. ‘It helps if you know what the inspector is thinking,’ he tells Spear's, adding that inexperienced inspectors often get lost in the information they are tasked with processing.
One recent challenge he faced was dealing with a client’s lapsed tax assessment: ‘The inspector became bogged down and didn’t realise the bigger picture,’ he says. He credited the compromise achieved to disclosure facilities, as they have raised billions for HMRC and helped his clients. His use of the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility (LDF) once reduced a client’s tax bill from £10 million to zero.
