James de Broë-Ferguson, a former Ruffer investment manager, is a senior investment director at Rathbones (incorporating Investec Wealth & Investment UK). He began his City career in 1988 as a hull broker at Lloyd’s, and now manages predominantly discretionary portfolios on behalf of private individuals, pensions, trusts, charities and private family unit trusts.

Known for a ‘loyal client base and his gracious good humour’, according to one industry insider, de Broë-Ferguson is a firm believer in the importance of active management – particularly in fraught times. ‘Clients need the reassurance that with active management centring on capital preservation, there is a better solution than some of the more reactionary plunges that can be seen across indices,’ he says.
