Sarah Balfour, a family law partner in Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office, has been with the firm for 20 years, specialising in divorce, related financial matters, and private children law.

Determined to disprove the notion that prenups are ‘unromantic’, she is passionate about the positivity that they can bring to a marriage. ‘Within a divorce, the greatest degree of acrimony arises from the uncertainty, the fear of the unknown. What can be more positive than a couple sitting down at the outset of their relationship, confirming their commitment to one another and acknowledging that, in the event they separate, they will treat each other with respect?’ she says.

Balfour also works within the firm’s ‘later-life group’; a developing part of her practice is acting for clients who have married or separated at an older age.
