‘I was always known as someone who was very technical, so I leaned towards a career that was focused on problem-solving,’ James Haythornthwaite, a private banker at Citi, told Spear’s. 

After graduating from the University of Warwick with a master’s degree in manufacturing and mechanical engineering, he joined Citi as part of the bank’s graduate scheme. Climbing up the ranks, he now works with Citi’s UHNW clients and single-family offices. 

Haythornthwaite explained that his UHNW clients primarily fall into two camps: entrepreneurs and finance professionals. He described his relationship with them as ‘intense’ by virtue of ‘the speed of response required’ and having to ‘juggle multiple things for each of my clients simultaneously’.
