Previously an in-house lawyer with shipbuilding company Blohm+Voss, Dr Michael Baumhauer is now of counsel at international law firm Taylor Wessing, where he advises UHNWs (and their suppliers) on megayacht new builds, conversions, refits and repair projects. 

Once such engagement saw Baumhauer work on Roman Abramovich’s 162.5m motor yacht Eclipse, which at the time was the longest private superyacht in the world – able to house 36 guests and 70 crew. 

On his approach to superyacht deals, Baumhauer tells Spear’s: ‘With a bespoke megayacht, it’s not only about the purchase, but leading the HNW client through what is a very technically complex construction project that can last for 24 to 36 months on average.’
