Leading the international offering in Weightmans’ London family team, Carina Smith handles multi-million-pound disputes that rarely involve just one country. Cases with links to the Asia Pacific region, the UAE and the United States frequently cross her desk, though, as she tells Spear’s, ‘a lot of my cases have a European edge by virtue of our location’. 

She often leans on Weightmans’ private wealth and immigration teams for matters with a cross-border dimension – a resource for existing clients, she finds, but equally a source of new ones. ‘Where people have got trusts, for instance, they might then need prenups,’ she says.

Increasingly, her work happens away from court. Smith now does ‘pretty much only private FDRs’, she says, part of a wider shift she sees as permanent. As the court system slows, the clients she acts for want their disputes resolved quickly and out of the public eye.
