Roger Weatherby

Spear’s Review

‘Innovation has always been key to our growth,’ says Weatherbys Private Bank chairman Roger Weatherby. ‘I think it’s fair to say that it’s not by luck that we’ve survived as a family business since 1770.’

Catering to UHNW and HNW banking needs – in 2024 Weatherbys was named Private Bank of the Year (UK) at the Spear’s Awards for the second year running – the firm has also played an integral part in British racing since its founding. Weatherby highlights trust as a key principle, alongside agility and decisiveness.

‘We see our [reputation as a traditional bank] as a real strength, and it’s rooted in values like trust and personal service. At the same time, we have to be a forward-thinking organisation. My mantra is very simple: it’s 100 per cent human and 100 per cent digital.’

Weatherby was CEO of the private bank between 2000 and 2023, stepping up to chairman in 2024 as part of the group’s long-term succession plans. Prior to this he served in the 15th/19th Hussars and worked at Cazenove & Co.

The majority of new clients to the bank come referred, Weatherby says. ‘There’s no more reliable testament to the unrivalled personal service and professional expertise our clients enjoy than the endorsements they freely offer to their friends and family.’

As wealth becomes increasingly mobile and impersonal, he has kept Weatherbys anchored in values of security, prudence and loyalty – a private bank that feels as much like a legacy as a financial institution. ‘Every client is treated like a member of its extended family, which has guided the business through seven generations of prudent stewardship.’
