Heading the Middle East Expatriate Law team, Byron James specialises in assisting clients who are undergoing a complex divorce or separation. As a result of his vast global client base, he is experienced in taking on cases that span multiple jurisdictions. 

He told Spear’s that it can be quite challenging when choosing the most appropriate jurisdiction in which to conduct a case in order to garner the best outcome for the client. However, he also notes that this can often be his most important focus when beginning a case, particularly one that involves the custody of children or the division of HNW assets. 

The UAE-based lawyer is also experienced in providing legal advice relating to the Sharia legal system widely in use across the Middle East. He acknowledged that it can be difficult to navigate and often demands consultation with experienced academics and scholars, but he emphasised that in situations where the Sharia system might be detrimental for the client, it is essential to ensure that a range of jurisdictions, where possible, have been considered.
