Luka Gakic, head of core fund management at Ruffer, was brought into this index on the back of a ringing endorsement from an industry peer, who simply concluded: ‘He’s an incredible man.’ 

Gakic first came to London as a six-year-old refugee fleeing the civil war that brewed in Sarajevo in 1992. An article he wrote for Ruffer on hyperinflation and quantitative easing captures his past experience: ‘I remember my father reporting this note [the Yugoslavic dinar] with 11 zeros was worth “roughly one cabbage”.’ 

The Oxford PPE graduate began his financial career at Lehman Brothers before joining Nomura as an equity trading associate. He joined Ruffer in 2011 as an investment associate and swiftly moved up the ranks to director level in 2016, when he started heading up the firm’s private client team.
