Bertie Dannatt
Spear’s Review
Bertie Dannatt, Ruffer’s head of private wealth, joined the firm as a graduate trainee in 2008 after five years in the Army. The University of Durham graduate also qualified as a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments in 2010. He is the son of Lord Dannatt, General Richard Dannatt, former chief of the general staff of the British Army.
Ruffer describes its approach as ‘distinctive’ and driven by an objective geared towards capital preservation. The firm’s two defining philosophies are: ‘To invest well, we need to take on risk’ and ‘With risk comes great responsibility’.
But rather than recklessly ‘charging headlong for growth’, the firm says that its aim is to ‘first defend against the risk of a permanent loss of capital’.
