‘I joined [Harbottle & Lewis] at 24 and was determined to be a corporate lawyer,’ Marian Derham recalls. While working in that area of law in the 1980s and 90s, she increasingly found herself handling employment matters, and became the firm’s go-to expert, ultimately establishing its dedicated employment practice.
Today, the partner uses her four decades of experience to advise C-suite executives, HNW individuals, family offices and high-profile celebrities. She specialises in negotiated entries and exits, which often involve unusually sensitive arrangements. ‘It’s not a typical employment contract,’ she explains. ‘Contracts have to be very solid and detailed, with an emphasis on confidentiality.
‘One of the greatest compliments is when someone has been on the opposite side in a case, and then they come to you when they need a lawyer,’ she says.
