A partner at EY and head of the private capital team, Martin Portnoy has spent the last two decades advising UHNWs on their tax and estate planning.

His clients range from wealthy entrepreneurs to UHNW multigenerational families; most are based in the UK, but some live internationally. A significant amount of his referrals come from his long-standing relationships with private banks and financial institutions.

‘I’ve got clients that I’ve been working with for 20 years – I’ve watched their kids grow up, and for some I’m even advising the second generation,’ he tells Spear’s. ‘I always say, look, I’m here for the long term.’

Working with clients in uncertain tax landscapes can be difficult, but communication is key, he notes. ‘I’ve not got a crystal ball; I can’t predict what’s going to happen, but I can help you make an educated decision.’
