Adrian Smale
Spear’s Review
EY partner Adrian Smale heads up the firm’s entrepreneurs and UHNW tax team, advising owner-managed businesses and tech entrepreneurs on their tax planning and structuring.
Having worked at a number of firms across his career, including PwC and Grant Thornton, he has honed his expertise over two decades to provide solid solutions to a diverse and evolving network – one he encounters daily in his current role. One successful case, the London-based adviser tells Spear’s, was when he worked on a 10-figure transaction in the music/entertainment space.
The Cambridge graduate says that the HNWs he works with are now asking questions about changes to inheritance tax and capital gains tax, and are consequently starting to think about whether now is the time to sell their business.
Adviser Profile
Adrian Smale is a partner at EY and leads the firm’s entrepreneurs and ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) tax team in London. With over 20 years of experience, he advises entrepreneurs, UHNW individuals and family offices globally on tax planning, business structuring, succession and exit strategies. His career includes senior roles at PwC and Grant Thornton, and he is known for his work with owner-managed businesses and tech entrepreneurs.
Adrian is a fellow chartered tax adviser and chartered accountant, holding a master’s degree from Cambridge University after graduating with a first in management sciences from Warwick University. A standout achievement includes advising on a 10-figure transaction in the music and entertainment sector. He is deeply committed to building a better working world by fostering an inclusive and empowering environment. Through mentoring, Adrian helps colleagues unlock their potential, offering guidance aligned with their strengths and goals. He champions open dialogue and integrates diverse perspectives into decision-making, cultivating a workplace where authenticity and collaboration thrive.
Adrian notes that many high-net-worth individuals are increasingly concerned about rising inheritance and capital gains tax rates. As a result, conversations around the timing of business sales are becoming more common. ‘That conversation will look different for everybody,’ he says, reflecting his commitment to bespoke, client-focused advice.
Outside of client work, Adrian is a regular contributor to thought leadership initiatives and industry forums, sharing insights on tax trends and entrepreneurial growth. His approach combines technical precision with a deep understanding of personal and commercial priorities.
