Matthew Williamson

Spear’s Review

Matthew Williamson started his working life as a fashion designer, building his own label and working as creative director for Emilio Pucci. Among his first interior design projects was the courtyard of Anouska Hempel’s Blakes hotel and the bridal suite in Aynhoe Park, Northamptonshire. He has since gone on to create spaces in Belmond’s La Residencia in Mallorca and London’s Design Museum.

In 2024, Williamson won the Andrew Martin Interior Designer of the Year Award. Andrew Martin founder Martin Waller tells Spear’s: ‘The thing that appeals about Matthew Williamson is that he marches to the beat of a different drum.’

Embracing the title ‘the king of maximalism’, Williamson brings an awareness of shade and form to his interiors. ‘What I do is full of passion, colour [and] optimism,’ he says. ‘It’s joyful. I tend to try and create things that bring a smile to people’s faces.’
