Claire Broadbelt is co-chair of the civil fraud and business disputes team at Greenberg Traurig; she is one of several lawyers who moved over from Mishcon de Reya in 2021.

Initially attracted to the criminal courts like so many young lawyers, she was soon drawn towards white-collar crime, then regulatory, then commercial fraud litigation. She tells Spear’s: ‘I’m absolutely not a white-collar crime specialist at all. But in my area of law – civil fraud and business disputes – you need to have an antenna for dealing with potential criminal regulatory issues.’ Broadbelt also ‘really enjoys the defence side’, she tells Spear’s.

The personal aspect of working for private clients is what holds Broadbelt’s interest. She says: ‘When you’re responding to a search order or freezing order, you’re dealing with people whose lives, quite frankly, are imploding,’ and she describes a lot of her work as ‘crisis management.’
