Spear’s Review

Located just a few steps away from Nairobi National Park in Langata, Kenya, The Banda School provides space for pupils to play, learn and spend time outdoors – activities that are central to the school’s ethos.

The school follows the UK curriculum, offering an early years programme, lower school and upper school, with pupils ultimately working towards the Common Entrance exams at the end of Year 8.

Beyond the classroom, students can participate in a number of sports, including football, cricket, swimming, rugby and netball, and the school’s co-curricular ‘Flight programme’ extends learning. Available from Year 3, this enrichment curriculum allows students to engage in community outreach, improve sustainability around the school, record podcasts and more.

Though a day school, Banda has a house system, and pupils are placed in one of four houses named after animals in Kiswahili.

Head teacher

The school is headed by James Moss-Gibbons, who joined Banda in 2023. Moss-Gibbons, who has a master’s degree from Oxford, has taught at and held leadership roles at UK schools such as Shrewsbury House and Lambrook School, and moved to Kenya in 2020, serving as deputy head at Kenton College for three years.

Senior school destinations

The Banda School has a strong relationship with some of the most prestigious senior schools in the UK, South Africa and Kenya, where pupils regularly continue their education.

Admissions

Children are allowed to apply at any entry point and throughout the academic year, but the most popular entry points are into nursery, Reception (from 4 years old) and the Lower School section of the school (from 5 years old). Parents are encouraged to enquire directly through a form on the school’s website.
