Spear’s Review
St Paul’s is an extremely academic school, and boys must pass a selection process aimed at identifying those with a natural flair for learning. Once granted entry they will rub shoulders with intellectually curious classmates who may well turn out to be the politicians and professors of their generation, following a well-trodden path walked by the likes of the Duke of Marlborough and Samuel Pepys.
Despite its metropolitan location, the school is set in 45 acres of green space next to the Thames, and pupils can take advantage of a range of activities alongside a rigorous academic curriculum, from fencing and rowing to forensics and AI studies.
Many pupils head off to Oxbridge or Russell Group universities or to those in the Ivy League.
Academics
In 2025:
- 98 per cent of GCSE results were grades 7-9
- 93 per cent of A-Level results were A* or A
Head teacher
Sally-Anne Huang, high master of St Paul’s School, has been in her current role since 2020; she is the first female head in the school’s 510-year history. Huang previously worked as head of James Allen’s Girls’ School in Dulwich, headmistress of Kent College, Pembury, and deputy head at Roedean School, Brighton. Huang read classics and English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.
University and college destinations
St Paul’s pupils gain places at universities around the world. In 2025, 21 per cent of pupils gained places at Oxford or Cambridge, while 8 per cent of students gained places at Ivy League schools.
Admissions
Those seeking entry to St Paul’s at 13+ are required to take the ISEB online pre-test and submit a reference from the head teacher of their current school covering their character, academic strengths and interests. The second stage of the selection process is two assessments – in maths and English. Candidates who perform well will be invited to an interview.
Those entering at 16+ will sit entrance examinations in their chosen A-Level subjects; those who perform well will be invited back for interviews with the subject heads or senior teaching staff in each of their chosen subjects and asked to write a supporting statement.
