Spear's Review
Founded in 1885 with the express purpose of providing girls’ education on an equal footing with the boys’ schools, Roedean has been instilling students with confidence and an inclusive spirit ever since.
In a beautiful coastal location just outside Brighton, the school is home to almost 700 girls, almost half of whom are full boarders. This is a school where girls can make some noise, take up space, explore and make decisions for themselves.
Appreciation of sport, culture, the arts and the opportunity to live a healthy life to the full are the foundations on which the school was built, and quite rightly it sees no reason to give them up.
Academics
79 per cent of GCSE results are 7-9 grades.
57 per cent of A-Level results are A* or A grades.
University and college destinations
The 2024 graduating class accepted places at prestigious universities including UCL, Imperial College London, University of Oxford and University of Cambridge. Other top destinations included University of Edinburgh, University of Leeds and University of Exeter. Some students secured places at renowned international institutions like the Ivy League Columbia University in New York.
Head teacher
Head Niamh Green has 20 years’ experience leading girls’ boarding schools, including as a French and German teacher, head of department, housemistress, deputy head and more recently as acting head. She holds an MBA from UCL and a PGCE from Cambridge University.
Admissions
The admissions process at Roedean School involves completing an online registration and submitting recent school reports. Applicants are then assessed through entry exams in key subjects and an interview to evaluate their academic abilities and personal qualities.
The school also considers references from current or previous schools. Successful candidates are offered a place based on their performance in the exams and interview, with a focus on academic potential and suitability for the school’s environment.
