Spear’s Review

‘Lo here is fellowship’ is the motto of Broomfield House School. It was coined by the first known headmistress of the school, Sara Eliza Mead, who was thought to be a descendant of King Charles II.

The school was established in 1876 and is the oldest private school in Kew. Its history has been preserved in the school’s existing infrastructure, even as it continues to modernise its facilities with state-of-the-art classrooms and science labs. Today, it educates around 150 children from 32 nationalities, with a focus on developing ‘resilient and kind’ pupils equipped to navigate the 21st century.

Broomfield offers a wide range of clubs, including a popular running club that makes full use of the surrounding green spaces. A highlight of the school calendar is the much‑loved ‘Headmaster for the Day’ event, in which one pupil shadows headmaster Adam Anstey and helps make key decisions.

With Kew Gardens on the doorstep, pupils also benefit from rich environmental learning through forest school sessions and eco councils.

School Profile

Broomfield House School, Kew’s oldest independent school, has been educating and inspiring children for 150 years, since 1876. It combines rich heritage with a forward‑thinking approach to offer a distinctive education that is both nurturing and academically ambitious.

Renowned for its warm, family atmosphere and excellent outcomes, Broomfield empowers every child to thrive. Its diverse, international community brings a richness to daily school life, creating an aspirational environment where children aged 2 to 11 learn alongside peers from around the world and develop an appreciation for different cultures. Set in leafy Kew Village, Broomfield is a home away from home. The school’s highly personalised approach means teachers know each child exceptionally well, providing tailored challenge and support through expertly differentiated lessons.

Broomfield’s vision extends beyond academic success: the school nurtures curiosity, kindness and a genuine love of learning, qualities that form the heart of a joyful and fulfilling prep school experience. Specialist teaching staff and partnerships with leading organisations, including premiership club Brentford FC, ensure pupils enjoy a broad, enriching foundation. Balancing academic rigour with emotional intelligence and character development, Broomfield prepares its pupils to become adaptable, thoughtful and confident young citizens. The school was awarded the rare distinction of ‘Area of Significant Strength for the Quality of Education’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the highest commendation within the national framework. Inspectors noted that pupils ‘make particularly rapid progress from their starting points’, praised the school’s ambitious curriculum, highly effective teaching and research-driven leadership, and highlighted Broomfield pupils as confident readers, articulate writers and advanced mathematical thinkers.

Head teacher

Adam Anstey has been the headmaster of Broomfield House School since 2023. Over his career he has held a number of leadership positions in day and boarding schools, in settings from early years to A-Level, in the state and independent sectors. He holds a PGDE from the University of Aberystwyth.

Senior school destinations

Broomfield students go on to study at some of the UK’s leading senior schools, including St Paul’s Girls’ School, Latymer Upper School and Kew House School.

Admissions

Registration is open from birth, and parents are recommended to register their child as early as possible. The primary entry point is the nursery class, which begins in the September following a child’s third birthday; however, there is also a ‘rising 3s’ classroom for children turning 3 in the term they join the school.

Broomfield does not assess children joining the early years or transition classes. However, those entering Year 2 and above will be invited to a trial morning, where they will engage in gentle assessments, participate in lessons, and enjoy lunch and break times with their prospective classmates.
