James Hambro
Company Profile
A fast-growing, independently owned wealth management and investment boutique, James Hambro was established in 2010 and has seen assets under management increase to over £6 billion as of early 2024.
The firm provides financial planning and investment management to private clients and their families, financial advisers and charities. It also offers investment solutions to professional advisers and manages investments for trusts, charities and not-for-profits.
Bypassing the relationship manager model, James Hambro gives clients direct access to their individual investment managers and financial planners, and prides itself on delivering a boutique service alongside a high-quality investment process.
History
The Hambro family has a long history in European financial services; Hambros Bank was founded by Carl Joachim Hambro in London in 1839.
In 1986, the Hambro family went their separate ways, and Jocelyn Hambro – along with children Rupert, Richard and James – set up J O Hambro and Sons. Hambros Bank was acquired by Société Générale in 1998 and, after being renamed to SG Hambros Bank in 2007, merged with Kleinwort Benson in 2016 to form SG Kleinwort Hambros.
Several boutique firms have their origins in Hambros Bank, including the aforementioned J O Hambro and Sons; Hambro Magan Corporate Finance; J O Hambro Capital Management; J O Hambro Investment Management; Rupert Hambro & Partners; Firecrest Hambro; EC Hambro Rabben & Partners; Duke Street Capital; and STAR Capital Partners.
James Hambro, whose paternal great-grandfather founded Hambros Bank and whose father was chair from 1965 to 1972, served as executive director of the bank between 1972 and 1985. He co-founded J O Hambro Investment Management (now Waverton), Hambro Magan and J O Hambro Capital Management.
In 2010 he launched James Hambro & Partners – the result of the separation of the private client arm of J O Hambro Capital Management into an independent business.
With headquarters on London’s Pall Mall, the firm has grown assets under management to £6.2 billion and expanded its UK footprint in recent years, with offices now in Leeds (opened in 2020), Edinburgh (2021) and Bristol (2023).

Private client services
Investment management
The portfolio managers at James Hambro & Partners oversee investments for a combination of onshore and offshore private individuals as well as financial advisers, trusts, non-profits and charities.
Through fund analysis and portfolio construction, managers create diversified, multi-asset portfolios with a core allocation to global equities. Allocations to fixed income, infrastructure and absolute-return funds are intended to diversify risk and provide additional sources of income.
According to the firm, the investment process is based on its own stock selection and strategic asset allocation; it also benefits from its relationship with J O Hambro Capital Management, which manages institutional funds.
Wealth management
James Hambro & Partners’ wealth management offering combines ongoing financial planning with flexible and responsive investment management, capturing myriad areas of wealth planning for high-net-worth individuals and families: tax-efficiency, cash flow analysis, risk management, wealth protection and preservation, and inheritance and succession planning.
Clients range from resident domiciled and non-domiciled HNWs to pension funds and offshore structures seeking advice on their international tax situation. Wealth managers may also advise clients going through significant financial changes – for example divorce or the sale of assets – or those with complex structures or overseas reporting obligations.
