Spear’s Review
Anthony Whatling is a managing director in the UK office of global professional services firm Alvarez & Marsal.
Having joined from Evelyn Partners in 2024, Whatling advises UHNW clients, trusts and family businesses on their tax liabilities; families who are moving from one jurisdiction to the other; and those who are setting up onshore or offshore structures to protect their wealth. He says he adds the most value where complex transactions are involved, or when it is necessary to navigate family dynamics and issues around succession.
Given changes in the UK tax landscape, Whatling says it is more important than ever to understand ‘how we can best mitigate the impact’ and give ‘practical and concise’ advice.
Adviser Profile
Anthony Whatling is a managing director at Alvarez & Marsal Tax LLP and leads the UK private capital team. He joined A&M at the start of 2024 from Evelyn Partners (now S&W) where he was a partner in the private client tax team. He has also worked within the Big Four and at BDO. He is a chartered tax adviser in the UK.
He is a personal tax adviser with over 20 years’ experience. His clients are a mix of entrepreneurs, private equity executives and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, as well as their family offices, trusts and investment vehicles. Within the private capital team, Whatling works alongside his corporate tax colleagues to ensure that any advice reflects the critical interplay between business and personal financial considerations.
Whatling’s areas of practice include international issues (residence and domicile), succession and inheritance tax planning as well as advising shareholders on transactions. Currently, his workload is being dominated by the recent changes to the tax regime for non-UK domiciled individuals, as well as the proposed restrictions to business and agricultural relief for inheritance tax.
Whatling believes tax advice should be clear, concise and lead to recommendations for clients, not just options. One example of that is with his entrepreneurial clients, who are facing significant disruption to their succession plans with the inheritance tax changes from April 2026. There can be a myriad of options, but what clients need is an adviser who can help them decide a clear path forward.
The focus on being proactive and action-oriented is at the heart of the whole private capital team at A&M.
