‘Times of crisis tend to be times of great opportunity to us,’ says Peter Gale of C. Hoare & Co. He tells Spear’s about how in 2008, the UK’s oldest private bank proved itself as a ‘flight to safety’ for an influx of new customers. It was a similar story later with coronavirus. ‘Whenever there’s uncertainty, we tend to do well.’  

Gale is the strategic leader of the Master Charitable Trust donor-advised fund and a banking team lead, where he is responsible for three private banking teams: entrepreneurs, family office and family businesses, and regional. 

The bank remains a ‘unique business’, he says. It ‘is ultra-conservative; the family has 100 per cent unlimited liability in the business so we have an ultra-robust balance sheet and high levels of liquidity and capital’.
