Kate Brett
Spear’s Review
Kate Brett trained as a solicitor at Anthony Gold, where she gained experience in property, civil litigation and family law; in 2009, she made the jump to Hughes Fowler Carruthers and was made partner in 2019.
Brett now acts for international HNWs and high-profile individuals in financial and children matters. Her cases are often high-value and involve complexities such as multiple jurisdictions, substance abuse, financial misconduct and coercive control.
‘It’s about attention to detail; I think it’s being heard and listened to,’ Brett tells Spear’s on her approach to working with clients, especially those who have come from difficult situations. ‘It’s having the confidence to be believed, and that there is a way out.’
Brett has acted in a number of reported cases in the High Court and Court of Appeal. James Roberts KC has commended her ‘detailed and strategic approach to cases in order to achieve the best possible outcome for her clients’.
Adviser Profile
Kate Brett specialises in all aspects of family law and is described as an ‘excellent choice’ in acting for international high- and ultra-high-net-worth and high-profile individuals in both financial and children’s matters. Peers praise Kate for her ‘detailed and strategic approach’ and say she is an ‘extremely diligent solicitor’ who leaves no stone unturned when fighting every element of her clients’ cases.
Her cases are invariably complex, requiring the incisive and pragmatic approach that she brings. She is frequently sought by clients for high-value financial cases involving intricate trust structures and other offshore assets. Additionally, Kate has extensive experience in drafting, negotiating and litigating complex prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.
Kate also continues to act in complex Children Act and Family Law Act cases, with particular expertise in matters involving substance misuse and drug testing, and complex cross-jurisdictional cases including relocation and change of primary carer.
Having been promoted to the partnership in April 2019, Kate has built a successful practice with a number of reported cases in the High Court and Court of Appeal.
Kate is focused but approachable, with excellent judgement and a keen eye for detail. James Roberts KC enthused that Kate is ‘a real star’ and praised her for having a tenacity driven by her determination to achieve the best possible outcome for her clients. She fights hard for her clients, but is commended for knowing when the best course of action is to settle.
In her spare time, Kate enjoys running, food and wine, and spending time with her young family.
