Spear’s Review

Dame Susan Langley is set to become the City of London’s Lady Mayor in November 2025, just the third woman to hold the office since the role of Lord Mayor of the City of London was established in the 12th Century. Today, the City of London describes the Lord or Lady Mayor as ‘an international ambassador for the UK’s financial and professional services sector’.

As the current non-executive chair for insurer Gallagher and a senior independent non-executive director for UK Asset Resolution, Langley has decades of experience in the financial services sector. Her storied career has taken in successful stints at Lloyd’s of London, Hiscox and Lloyd’s Japan. She has also held roles at the heart of public life, including as lead non-executive director of the Home Office and as a board trustee of Macmillan Cancer Support.

A proud East Ender, Langley was born in West Ham in the 1960s and has been steadfast in her desire to improve social mobility and serve as a mentor for women in the City. She has been recognised for her work with an OBE and a damehood.

Langley is also liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Insurers and the Drapers and has been an alderwoman since 2018. She is currently one of two sheriffs, a prerequisite to becoming Lady or Lord Mayor.
