Spear's Review

At Avenues New York, education is designed with the same ambition and creativity as the city that surrounds it. Located beside the High Line in Manhattan, the school's ethos centres around reimagining what modern learning can look like.

From the earliest years, students learn through bilingual immersion in Spanish or Mandarin alongside English in order to develop cultural fluency and the cognitive flexibility to think across perspectives. Signature programmes such as ‘Mastery’ and ‘Global Journeys’ encourage students to pursue thorough research, travel internationally and apply their learning to real-world challenges.

Independence and leadership are cultivated through daily practice: students are urged to take ownership of their work, collaborate across cultures and reflect on their impact. 

Academics

The school has its own unique curriculum centred around fostering global mindedness. Students are, however, tested across their courses in a given year, and graduation requirements involve achieving a certain number of credits. Students can also opt to take the SATs or ACTs. 

Head teacher

Todd Shy joined Avenues in 2012, the school’s first year of operation, as a humanities instructor for the middle grades. He became head of school in 2024. He received a BA from the University of Virginia in the US, completed graduate coursework at King’s College London and obtained a master of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary.

University and college destinations

In 2025, 100 per cent of the graduating class continued their studies at university, and 25 per cent accepted places at Ivy League schools. 

Admissions

Avenues' admission process involves submitting an application, completing an interview and providing supporting materials including previous school records and teacher evaluations.
