Spear’s Review
Located in Hammersmith in West London, Latymer Upper School is an independent day school with a reputation for academic excellence. Blending traditional education with a modern outlook, the school prepares students to be ‘well-rounded and caring citizens of the future’.
Pupils regularly achieve top grades in GCSE and A-Level examinations, and a significant number of students go on to study at the best universities in the UK, including Oxford and Cambridge.
Outside the classroom, students are encouraged to immerse themselves in music, drama, art and sport. With around 150 clubs and societies on offer, from orchestra to ultimate frisbee, there is space for pupils’ interests to flourish.
Academics
In 2025:
- 96 per cent of GCSE results were grades 7-9
- 81 per cent of A-Level results were A* or A
Head teacher
Susan Wijeratna was appointed head of Latymer in 2023. The Brighton College alumni studied geography at the University of Birmingham before teaching at a number of the UK’s leading public schools. Before Latymer, she was the deputy head at St Paul’s Girls’ School and the first female lower master at Eton College.
University and college destinations
In 2025, 21 students accepted offers from Oxford University, while 13 matriculated at the University of Cambridge. Some students chose to pursue further education abroad, attending universities in the US, including Harvard, Princeton and Yale.
Admissions
According to the school, the main ages of admission are 11 and 16. At 11+, the admissions process involves registering for a school-set exam in English and maths, attending the assessment, and, for selected candidates, returning for an interview session before final decisions are made. For 16+ entry, candidates must also submit academic reports.
