Spear’s Review
Founded in 1847, Glenalmond College is set within a 300-acre estate in Perthshire. Nearly two centuries on, the school retains its Anglican foundations, with chapel and chaplaincy continuing to contribute to its pastoral and community framework. Fully co-educational, it continues to attract families looking for a traditional schooling experience in a rural setting, with the majority of pupils living on campus.
Academically, the ‘Eton of the North’ offers a flexible curriculum, allowing pupils to combine GCSEs, A-Levels and Scottish Highers – plus a BTEC or EPQ – a structure that provides breadth but also reflects the school’s pragmatic approach to university preparation. Outdoor education is a notable feature, shaped by the school’s proximity to the Highlands, while rugby, CCF (Combined Cadet Force) and music remain established strengths.
Academics
According to the school, in 2025 there was a rise in the number of GCSE Grade 9s. The A-Level pass rate also increased, as did the number of students achieving A* and A grades.
Head teacher
Timothy Bayley, Glenalmond College’s warden, also serves as CEO of the Glenalmond Schools Group UK (comprising Glenalmond College and Craigclowan School & Nursery). He took up the role in January 2026.
University and college destinations
In 2025, 87 percent of the graduating class secured a place at their first-choice university. Among the cohort, 45 per cent gained places at Russell Group institutions.
Admissions
To apply to Glenalmond, parents first submit an enquiry form and may visit the school in person or virtually, before completing a registration form with supporting documents. Pupils then sit maths and English assessments, after which the school makes a formal offer and provides joining instructions once a place is accepted and a deposit paid.
