Spear’s Review
St George's School Windsor Castle dates to 1348, when the College of St George was founded by King Edward III. Despite being one of the oldest schools in the UK, it is committed to providing a forward-looking, pioneering education, with an emphasis on critical thinking: ‘Focusing on asking the right questions rather than simply answering them.’
At prep school level, St George’s is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) and is pursuing authorisation as an IB World School, while the Year 7 and Year 8 programme adopts the framework of the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB), which assesses students on core skills such as thinking and learning, communicating, collaboration and leadership alongside traditional academics.
The school considers it a priority to offer each student a comprehensive mindfulness programme, and a dedicated mental health team is on hand to offer support to children as well as parents. Co-curricular activities also play an important role: there is a high-level performing arts faculty, which includes ballet and drama classes, as well as a range of sporting opportunities, such as a water polo club and a rugby team.
Head teacher
Emma Károlyi has been the head of St George’s School Windsor Castle since September 2024, bringing 30 years of experience in UK primary and prep education and leadership. She was previously the head of the junior school at The King’s School Canterbury. According to the school, Károlyi is ‘an advocate for creativity’ and ‘dedicated to the holistic development of children while nurturing individuality’.
Admissions
St George's School holds open days throughout the year and encourages applicants and their families to visit the campus before applying via a registration form. When a place becomes available, students entering Year 1 onwards are invited to a ‘taster day’, after which the school determines whether the pupil can be offered a place.
