Spear’s Review

Founded in 1914, Western Province Preparatory School (WPPS) has a rich history of educating the young men of Cape Town. Situated just a 10-minute drive from the city centre, the Anglican school is dedicated to fostering empathy, discipline and character in all its students.

The school is spread across two close-by campuses: Eden Road, which caters for nursery through to Grade 2, and Newlands Road, home to a state-of-the-art science laboratory and which accommodates Years 3 through 7.

Built upon the values of compassion, accountability, courage, respect, integrity and humility, the school allows every boy to find his place within the diverse WPPS community. The school follows the South African national curriculum and offers a range of extracurricular activities, including swimming, music and, of course, rugby.

Academics

While prep school students do not sit public examinations in South Africa, WPPS is known for its commitment to holistic education, integrating academic, sporting and cultural activities to foster well-rounded development in its pupils.

Western Province Preparatory School is an Anglican, independent school for boys. These pillars shape our approach to education and provide a clear and stable framework within which boys are taught, guided and supported as they grow. Our Anglican foundation informs the virtues that underpin daily school life – respect, integrity, compassion, humility and responsibility to others. We are shaped and guided by the sacraments, the rhythm of worship, the Anglican liturgy and by celebrating the liturgical calendar. Therefore, as an Anglican school, we warmly welcome boys from all faiths and backgrounds. Our aim is to be inclusive and respectful, grounded in values that help boys develop strong character and sound judgement.

As a boys-only school, we understand the unique nature of boyhood. Boys arrive with energy, curiosity and a desire to explore the world around them. At WPPS, this energy is not something to suppress but is something to guide. Through a balanced focus on academic, sport, cultural, emotional, physical and social development, boys grow in confidence, resilience and self-discipline.

Head teacher

Wayne Naidoo has been headmaster at WPPS since 2023, building on a 25-year career in education, including time spent as headmaster at The Ridge School in Johannesburg.

Admissions

According to the school, the application process begins with completion of an online registration form, with applications being accepted from birth. For entry into the first grade (ages 4-5), offers will be made in March the year prior to commencement. For entry above that age, there is a waiting list.
