Spear’s Review

Founded in 1886, Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) is a Methodist institution with a strong focus on delivering students a well-rounded education in a values-centric environment.

ACS(I) prides itself on academic excellence, and offers two academic tracks: a four-year programme leading to GCE O-Levels, and a six-year integrated programme leading to the IB diploma programme. While only boys attend the school between Year 1 and Year 4, ACS(I) offers co-educational learning for the IB programme in Years 5 and 6.

Alongside their studies, students can take advantage of over 60 sports, games, clubs, societies and activities run by the school. ACS(I) recognises that making time for hobbies and interests is paramount to a student’s development, so pupils are expected to undertake at least two co-curricular activities in the lower school and at least one co-curricular activity in the upper school.

The school also offers boarding, and around 500 students and staff call ACS(I) home during term time.

Academics

Average IB score is 41.2.

University and college destinations

ACS(I) alumni have gone on to study at prestigious universities including all eight Ivy League schools, Oxford and Cambridge, and many highly acclaimed Asian universities.

Head teacher

Arene Koh is principal of Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) and has held the post since 2018, when he took over from Winston James Hodge. Alongside his duties as principal, Koh also acts as boarding school warden.

Admissions

Part of the admissions process includes undertaking a written examination which differs according to age ability each year. Students may be admitted into the six-year programme at Year 1 or Year 3 and proceed to the IB diploma programme in their fifth and sixth years.
