Spear’s Review

When British School of Muscat (BSM) was established in 1971, it opened its doors to a grand total of three students. Just two years later, the school was granted a royal charter by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said.

The school now has over 1,000 students enrolled and is Muscat's only not-for-profit British school. It offers a rigorous UK national curriculum with students working towards (I)GCSEs and A-Levels. Its exam results have typically ranked the school among the top British international schools in the Gulf region

Academics

In 2025:

  • 51 per cent of (I)GCSE results were grades 7-9
  • 46 per cent of A-Level results were A* or A

Head teacher

Principal Kai Vacher has been at BSM since 2011, following a 25-year career in the British education system. He is a board member of Tes Institute Global Advisory Board and the Council of British International Schools, country representative of British Schools in the Middle East and host of Educator’s Corner, a podcast that Vacher describes as offering ‘engaging conversations with educators from all over the world about the issues, challenges and opportunities we are facing in our schools and communities’.

University and college destinations

Alumni have gone on to prestigious universities across the UK and North America, including Cambridge, St Andrews, Columbia and Stanford. In 2025, 92 per cent of the graduating class continued their studies at university.

Admissions

According to the school, students applying for Years 1 to 11 must take a cognitive ability test, provide a positive supporting reference from their previous school and complete a successful interview. Students applying for Sixth Form must demonstrate their academic ability and contribution to school life. Each A-Level subject chosen has its own minimum entry requirement, usually a Grade 6 or B at GCSE. They must also provide a positive supporting reference and complete a successful interview.
