Spear’s Review
The British School of Milan (BSM) is an independent pre-prep to senior school for children aged 3 to 18.
BSM was founded in 1969 with the aim to provide an exemplary British education in one of Italy’s most influential cities. Over 50 years later, the school is still providing a top-class education, and children achieve excellent results before progressing to top universities in the world.
Alongside a challenging curriculum, BSM students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities, and with over 100 to choose from, students are able to pursue their hobbies and interests. There are active art and drama clubs and classes, many competitive sports and a comprehensive music programme. The school offers the Duke of Edinburgh’s award, and there is even an Eisteddfod – a ‘grand cultural gathering’ with its origins in Wales – making for a school that truly embraces and emulates British traditions.
At the same time, students are also offered the opportunity to learn and develop their Italian. Native speakers can take some classes in Italian as well as take exams from the Italian curriculum ‘to maintain a stronger link with the culture and educational system of Italy’.
Academics
74 per cent of IGCSE results are grades 7–9.
Average IB score is 37.3.
University and college destinations
BSM students go on to matriculate at some of the top schools in the world. In 2024, destinations included Cambridge University in the UK; in the US, destinations included Columbia University.

Having received an education in Devon, Lockyer completed a BSc in microbiology at the University of Newcastle and a PGCE at the University of Cambridge. He also has an MA in educational leadership from the University of Buckingham.
