Spear’s Review

In the heart of Kenya, a few hours outside Nairobi, is a superb prep school run on a traditional UK curriculum but multicultural and modern in teaching practice, diversity and inclusivity.

Children from all over the world fly to Pembroke House for the freedom it offers its pupils, as well as the strength of character, good manners, civility and team spirit it engenders. The boys and girls are taught to rely on each other in school and in the countryside around. Following the British Common Entrance programme, destinations include top schools in Britain and internationally.

Alongside a holistic and well-rounded curriculum, Pembroke House pupils benefit from the range of sports and activities available to them: students can partake in rugby, mountain biking, taekwondo, woodwork, riding and the LAMDA speech and drama programme. Pupils looking for a more tranquil Thursday afternoon may read peacefully in the vast and stunning library, or try their hand at gardening.

Academics

Pembroke House pupils are well prepared for the Common Entrance exam, and every year they receive a number of academic scholarships and awards at the point of entry to secondary school.

Head teacher

Deborah Boyd-Moss is headmistress at Pembroke House. Born in Tanzania, she was brought up in the UK and graduated with a master’s from Cambridge University before pursuing her PGCE. Boyd-Moss previously taught at the Banda in Nairobi.

Senior school destinations

Destinations include schools all around Africa. Many also go to the UK to continue their schooling and enrol at senior schools such as Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Gordonstoun and Marlborough College.

Admissions

Pembroke House is non-selective: registrations are open all year, and children of all ages are accepted depending on the availability of spaces in the relevant year group. Parents are required to provide two recent reports from a child’s previous school, and the head may contact the school for further information, if required.
