Spear’s Review

Aiglon College was founded by John Corlette, who, having taught at Gordonstoun, drew inspiration from Kurt Hahn’s philosophy of experiential education – a model the school continues to follow today.

Aiglon’s scholarship programme is central to the school’s not-for-profit status. Since 1991, Aiglon has welcomed 133 scholars into its mountain community. The school currently supports 21 scholars, with their education funded equally by the alumni and parent communities and the school.

Outdoor education, expeditions and service projects remain central to cultivating curiosity and a sense of global responsibility among students from over 65 nationalities. The school also maintains one of Switzerland’s strongest adviser-to-student ratios, with personalised guidance beginning in the junior years. Those targeting elite universities, including the Ivy League, benefit from departmental liaisons, on-campus SAT preparation and access to visiting university representatives.

The campus, described as a ‘village within a village’, houses 10 boarding residences, six science laboratories and dedicated arts facilities including a recording and drama studio. Robotics, geography fieldwork and a robust summer camp programme further reflect Aiglon’s commitment to innovation and character development.

In 2025:

School Profile

Aiglon College is a not-for-profit, international and co-educational boarding school. For over 77 years, the school has offered students a holistic and inspirational experience that pushes the boundaries of traditional education. John Corlette founded the school in 1949 on a distinctive ethos: the balanced development of mind, body and spirit.

Aiglon is home to over 480 students, from 7 to 18 years old, representing more than 65 different nationalities.

From junior through to senior school, students benefit from all the advantages of an international boarding environment. They form lasting bonds with each other and with excellent educators who guide them towards academic and personal success. The environment is fundamental to the students’ development. Aiglonians discover that the unique mountaintop position provides a fresh perspective while offering opportunities for challenge.

The teacher-to-student ratio is 1:4, and the average class size is 12, ensuring individual attention to each student. The school has four cohorts: Wonder Years (ages 7-10), Discovery Years (ages 11-13), Exploration Years (ages 14-15) and Inspiration Years (ages 16-18), each overseen by an assistant head. Students follow the globally recognised International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes. Aiglon participates in accreditation programmes through the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Students immerse themselves in over 120 activity options, ranging from robotics and taekwondo to Model United Nations, with new offerings continually introduced.

The journey through the school prioritises holistic education and celebrates creativity.

A summer camp is offered from June to July for ages 8 to 16.

Head teacher

Nicola Sparrow has been school director at Aiglon since 2019. She was previously director of studies at Harrow International School Bangkok for 13 years. She has a history and politics degree from Brunel University of London, a PGCE in history from the University of Oxford and an MBA from the University of Leicester.

University and college destinations

Graduates have gone on to study at top-tier American universities such as Stanford, NYU, UC Berkeley and UCLA, as well as institutions such as King’s College London, St Andrews, LSE, University of Toronto and Trinity College Dublin. In 2025, 3 per cent of the graduating class accepted places at Ivy League colleges.

Admissions

According to the school, Aiglon strives to make the admissions process as personalised and positive as possible, and applications may be submitted up to one year in advance. For Year 12 applications, the school requires on-campus interviews and assessments, while other year groups may conduct these online. At the same time, on-campus visits and interviews are encouraged for all students.

Once an application is submitted, the school typically makes a decision within four weeks.
