Spear’s Review
La Garenne is a co-educational, family-run IB diploma boarding and day school that offers an outstanding education to primary, middle years and senior school pupils. Although the curriculum is taught in English, La Garenne takes a bilingual approach to educating its community, who are all fluent French speakers. Indeed, one of the aims of the school is to teach its graduates to thrive in an international setting.
Pupils are encouraged to develop a lifelong passion for learning and thrive in the warm, family atmosphere. Located in the shadow of Mont Blanc, the newly renovated senior school has opened its doors in a beautiful building right alongside the ski lifts, which see a huge amount of use by pupils in the wintry months.
Outside of the classroom, students can engage in a vast array of sports, activities, trips and clubs, including climbing, hockey, hill-walking and kayaking. Weather not permitting, students may partake in clubs such as cookery, yoga and dance, or experience Swiss culture via visits to cheese- and chocolate-making factories.
Academics
Average IB score is 34.
University and college destinations
La Garenne nurtures global citizens, so it is no surprise that those graduating go on to matriculate at top universities all across the globe, including in the UK and the US.
Head teacher
Grégory Méan is the general director of La Garenne. He works alongside Danielle Allard and Adam Jozef. Allard, head of the primary school, taught in England before arriving at La Garenne in 2008. She has since been in charge of developing and implementing the primary curriculum and assessment structure, including introducing Cambridge English qualifications. Jozef is head of the secondary school. He has taught in the Middle East, the UK and Germany, including more than 10 years as an IB diploma programme coordinator. In addition to his role as head, he teaches history, politics and theory of knowledge at La Garenne.
Admissions
La Garenne accepts applications from students up to two years in advance of planned entry. Following submission of an enquiry form, parents will be contacted by the school’s admissions staff for an informational discussion. Alongside completion of an admissions form, parents are advised to visit the school with their child; depending on the stage of the admissions process, applicants may be interviewed, sit tests and meet with La Garenne students. Required documentation includes academic reports, a recommendation from a previous school and a motivational letter. The child must also prepare a presentation, video or letter that ‘[demonstrates] his/her passion in life’.
