Spear’s Review

Seen around town in their capes and ‘jelly bag’ caps complete with large red tassels, Falkner House students are part of the character and history of London’s Kensington neighbourhood. The school itself, which is split across two sites – Brechin Place for girls and Penywern Road for boys – places an emphasis on pastoral care, staying small to retain a homely feel.

Indeed, although the curriculum at Falkner House is rigorous and broad, importance is also placed on the processual aspects of learning such as the steps taken to complete a piece of homework. ‘Being set a task and remembering that task, when it is due and delivering it when required are all fundamental life skills that we help to instil,’ the school says.

Emotional support is also central to Falkner House; three dogs can be found residing in the boys’ school and two guinea pigs at the girls’ school. In the classroom, children can learn a range of languages, humanities and the arts and even study Greek and Roman myths and legends.

Senior school destinations

In 2024, girls were accepted into Cheltenham Ladies’ College, Marlborough CollegeSt Paul’s School and Wycombe Abbey, while boys accepted places at Brighton College, Eton, Harrow and Radley College.

Head teacher

Anita Griggs, a daughter of founder Flavia Nunes, become head of the Falkner House girls’ school in 1999, and today is principal of both the girls’ and boys’ schools. Her four daughters are also involved in the school; Eleanor Dixon is head of the boys’ school and Flavia Rogers head of the girls’ school.

Admissions

Admission to the school includes a registration of interest which is available from birth. Normally children enter in Reception, although there are occasional places available, particularly for those joining in Year 3. Approximately one year before a child would be due to start at Falkner House, they are invited to complete an assessment with the key criteria being that they would be ‘successful and happy’ at Falkner House.
