Spear’s Review  

Founded in 1997, Jerudong International School (JIS) has grown into one of Asia’s most established British international day and boarding schools. Set across a 120-acre campus bordering beach and rainforest, it educates nearly 1,700 pupils aged 2 to 18 from 45 nationalities, creating a community that is both international and residential at its core.

Boarding underpins the school’s ethos, with a house system fostering enduring friendships and a strong sense of belonging. Leadership is cultivated at every level, from student councils to peer-led initiatives, while a wide-ranging co-curricular programme encourages exploration beyond the classroom. 

Pastoral care is central: a team of counsellors alongside nurses ensures students feel supported, and wellbeing is embedded in routines and the school community.

A dedicated higher education office provides tailored guidance from an early stage, with specialist advisers supporting applications to universities across the UK and US.

Consistent, strong academic outcomes secure entry into leading universities worldwide.

Sustainability is embedded across school life, and the school has received the Global Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. Its Outdoor Discovery Centre, a reforested classroom, enables a variety of student-led projects. Wider initiatives include coral reef restoration, recycling and environmental leadership, and JIS is Brunei’s first school to implement a large-scale solar energy system.

Extensive sports, visual and performing arts provision and a vibrant house system that underpins pastoral care and community spirit ensure students leave JIS as confident, well-rounded global citizens fully prepared for life beyond school.

Head teacher  

Nicholas Sheehan is the principal of JIS. He has been with the school since 2012, starting as a geography teacher and progressing to academic director, assistant principal and principal in 2019.  

University and college destinations

Graduates of Jerudong International School have consistently progressed to leading universities worldwide. In the United Kingdom, alumni have been accepted into institutions such as Cambridge University, UCL  and Imperial College London. In the United States, destinations include Harvard University, Brown University, Cornell University and UC Berkeley.

Admissions  

According to the school, entrance assessments vary depending on the age of entry. The applications are reviewed by the  admissions team and the head of junior school or head of senior school, who make the final admission decision.
