Spear’s Review

Uppingham School was founded in 1584 and is one of the oldest independent schools in the UK. Located in the town of Uppingham in Rutland, it has a rich academic tradition paired alongside a broad curriculum of 26 subjects at A-Level.

The school is known for its excellent facilities, including modern science, arts and sports buildings. It also offers a wide range of co-curricular activities for students interested in sports, drama and music, allowing students to develop their talents outside the classroom.

With a strong sense of community and tradition, Uppingham provides a well-rounded education for students, helping them excel academically and personally.

In 2025:

Head teacher

The current headmaster of Uppingham School is Dr Richard Maloney, who took up the role in 2016. Maloney has a strong academic background, holding a degree in theology from the University of St Andrews and a doctorate in education policy from King’s College London. Before joining Uppingham, he was headmaster of St Bede’s in Essex.  

University and college destinations

In 2025, graduates received offers from Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Durham, St Andrews, University College London and Kings College London, as well as Harvard in the US.

Admissions

Uppingham is an academically selective school, and assessment includes an entry examination, an interview, and references and other relevant information from the candidate’s previous school.

The usual points of entry are at Fourth Form (Year 9) at age 13, Lower Fifth Form (Year 10) at age 14 and Lower Sixth (Year 12) at age 16. From 2025, entry into Year 7 and Year 8 is also possible.
