Spear’s Review

The Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) is Malaysia’s premier residential school for boys aged 12 to 17. It is one of only two boarding schools in the country that are under royal patronage, and it has been referred to as the ‘Eton of the East’ by some commentators.

The main building was built in 1910 in a pseudo-Greco-Roman architectural style, and looks out over the school’s playing fields, where pupils frequently partake in sports such as hockey, volleyball, tennis, rugby and basketball. If outdoor pursuits are not appealing, then MCKK has many clubs and co-curricular societies on offer, including robotics, the UNESCO club, the neuroscience club, the crime prevention club and the Arabic language society.

MCKK aims to create a new generation of students who achieve academic excellence, and who have sound leadership skills and a strong sense of individuality. The school is a member of the Global Alliance of Leading-Edge Schools, which is led by the Raffles Institution in Singapore.

The school has educated some of the leading figures of the 20th and 21st century in South East Asia, including Omar Ali Saifuddien III (29th Sultan of Brunei), Razali Ismail (former president of the UN General Assembly) and Abdul Rahman of Negeri Sembilan (first head of state in Malaysia).
