Spear’s Review
There have been Salopians (alumni of Shrewsbury) since the 16th century, all with floreat – individual flourishing – on their minds. The purpose of a Shrewsbury education, the school says, is to empower each individual pupil to find their own way to flourish and make a positive contribution to the world around them.
In this day and boarding school for 13-to-18-year-olds in the west Shropshire town from which it gets its name, that means ‘serious fun’, an ambitious approach to academic studies, co-curricular activities and outward bound sports that take advantage of the hilly countryside surrounding the grounds.
The opening of a sister campus in Bhopal, India, has further strengthened the school’s global outlook. One of the largest co-educational boarding schools in central India, it supports cross-cultural learning and exchange programmes with the UK.

School Profile
Shrewsbury School is one of England’s great boarding schools, founded by royal charter in 1552. Set on a spectacular riverside campus in Shropshire, it offers an education defined as ‘Serious Fun’ – high academic ambition balanced by warmth, originality and a distinctive commitment to whole-person education.

Among its most celebrated alumni is Charles Darwin, who credited the school with giving him the freedom to think independently and cultivate the curiosity that shaped his groundbreaking work. That spirit of intellectual independence remains central to a Shrewsbury education today.

In 2025, the school welcomed the largest intake in its history and remains fully subscribed at 848 pupils. Co-educational and predominantly full boarding, with day pupils fully integrated into house life, Shrewsbury’s house system provides a true home from home. Structured pastoral care, tutoring and peer mentoring underpin an environment in which pupils thrive academically and socially.

Academic outcomes are consistently strong. In 2025, 77 per cent of A-Level grades were A*-B, with 39 pupils achieving straight A*-A, and 60 per cent of (I)GCSE grades were 9-7, including 616 grades 9/8. The current cohort has secured six Oxbridge offers and a Harvard offer, alongside progression to leading UK, US and international universities, conservatoires and drama schools.
Breadth of opportunity is equally distinctive. In 2024/25, over 120 teams competed in more than 800 fixtures across a wide sporting programme. Alongside this sits a vibrant cultural and leadership offer, including over 45 societies – from beekeeping and Model United Nations to volunteering and technical theatre.
Head teacher
Leo Winkley has been headmaster of Shrewsbury School since 2018. Prior to that, he was head of St Peter’s School in York and deputy head of Bedales School in Petersfield. A graduate of Cranleigh School, he has a master’s in theology from the University of Oxford and a Master of Education degree from The Open University.
University and college destinations
In 2025, 65 per cent of the graduating class accepted offers from Russell Group universities, including 15 who secured places at Oxford or Cambridge.
Admissions
According to the school, most applicants begin their journey with Shrewsbury three years prior to starting at the school, and families are encouraged to attend an open day at the school in the first instance. As part of the application process, students entering at Year 9 will need to have taken the common entrance examinations, or will be asked to sit Shrewsbury’s exam. Sixth Form applicants will take assessment exams in line with their A-Level plans and attend an interview with a senior member of staff.
