Spear’s Review

At George, one of the ‘Birley clubs’ owned by Richard Caring, guests are met at the door by the club’s dog, aptly named George, and welcomed into a metallic-blue space framed by a collection of David Hockney artworks. There is usually space on Mayfair’s largest terrace, or they can sit inside at the long bar or near the open kitchen, a feature carried over during the renovation of the private members’ club in 2023.

Downstairs is a deep-red cocktail bar edged with finely furnished nooks and booths for more private groups, and a set of DJ decks behind an art deco plinth for the more party-inclined members. A heavily ventilated cigar terrace sits to one side, with Lalique glass dogs maintaining the man’s-best-friend theme.

George does not offer accommodation, but guests in this part of Mayfair are rarely stuck for options when they tumble out onto the wide streets at one in the morning, happily feeling the effects of fine food, drink and company.
