Níall McLaughlin

Spear’s Review

Níall McLaughlin, principal of his eponymous architecture firm, doesn’t specialise in a particular type of design, but in ‘high-quality architecture’.

Such principles are more important than working in any specific style, McLaughlin tells Spear’s: ‘We hope each project will be an original interpretation of the client, site, brief and budget.’ He works closely with end users on bespoke residential and commercial projects, with a speciality in the inventive use of building materials.

His work on the House at Goleen, completed in 2009, is exemplary of the firm’s sustainability and ethical considerations. The home is constructed using Irish blue limestone which will, in time, weather to blend in with the surrounding West Cork hills.

McLaughlin holds professorships at UCL, Yale and UCLA, and counts Young British Architect of the Year 1998 among his numerous accolades. In 2019 he was made a Royal Academician in the architecture category.
