Spear’s Review
Joe Crome joined the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in 2020. As head of business development, he leads the American Donor Fund, working with clients who are dual taxpayers in the US and UK to support them in their charitable giving. He is also in charge of growing and raising awareness of the fund.
As well as advising on effective giving, CAF assists in investing charitable funds, offering guidance to aspiring philanthropists who wish to make a large donation but who are not yet sure how to allocate the funds, crystallising their intentions and identifying appropriate vehicles.
Crome has been in the charity sector for his entire career. He tells Spear’s he has always been ‘passionate about the stewardship of funding’. Prior to joining CAF, he was director of philanthropy at a community foundation, and has also previously led two charities for young people. He has plenty of front-line experience of the issues impacting communities and how funding can be used most effectively.
Adviser Profile
Joe Crome is Head of Business Development at Charities Aid Foundation American Donor Fund (CADF), where he heads up a team who specialise in supporting US/UK dual taxpayers. CADF is a dual qualified Donor Advised Fund, which enables his clients who file tax returns in both the US and UK to achieve dual tax relief on all of their charitable giving worldwide.
A Donor Advised Fund is for many of Joe’s clients a preferable vehicle to creating a Private Foundation, as CADF takes care of all of the accounting, reporting and regulatory compliance, meaning that clients can focus on enjoying their philanthropy and making an even bigger impact.
CADF’s benefit to their clients also includes Gift Aid, which can be applied to eligible gifts due to their charitable status in England and Wales. Clients can donate cash, appreciated securities or other assets such as property and artwork, and once the assets are applied to their fund they may suggest whether to grant the donation on to causes they are passionate about, or invest the funds to enable growth for the future.
Joe has spent 15 years within the charity sector. Before joining CAF, he was Director of Philanthropy at a Community Foundation, where he supported and advised high-net-worth families with their giving within their local area.
Joe’s expertise specialises in charitable grant-making regulations in the UK and US, donating complex assets, philanthropy advice for individuals and families, and anti-money laundering and related due diligence pertaining to charitable donations.
Joe recently completed the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy designation with the American College of Financial Services, the only adviser working in the UK to have done so. He also holds the Advanced Certificate in International Anti-Money Laundering from the International Compliance Association.
